The Golden Mickeys

The Golden Mickeys is broadway style musical presented as an award show with Disney characters nominated in categories as heriosm and romance.  The show started on Disney Cruise Line as the replacement for the Morty the Magician show.  It started on the Disney Wonder in September 2003 and came to the Disney Magic in Autumn 2004.  Also on the Disney Dream the Golden Mickeys is performed in an updated version with extra scenes from The Little Mermaid and Tangled and some extra effects because it’s a bigger and more modern stage.

It tells the story of a shy cast member, Ensign Benson, who accidentally becomes the host of the award show (after the missing of the regular host of the show, the captain).  The shy Ensign Benson isn’t very confident as host from the show, but she’s supported by the different ‘real’ celebrities in the form of interactive video clips.  She also appears in different songs and dances.  These are from Hunchback of Notre Dame, Pocahontas, Mulan, the Lion King, Snow White, Toy Story, Toy Story 2, 101 Dalmatians and Lady and the Tramp.

What it all makes special is the format of the preshow.  While you walk to the theater you walk over the red carpet while you are photographed by paparazzi, because your are tonight’s star.  Everybody looks perfect as the Golden Mickeys is always performed on the formal night on board.  Also outside of the theater Rona Rivers interviews the entering stars (you).  Most of the time children are picked for that.  You can follow those interviews in the theater on two big screens.  Entertainment for the audience waiting inside.

Before the show is the Captain’s Welcome Reception. In the Lobby Atrium you are treated to a cocktail in presence of the captain and some of the officers.  You always have the possibility for a small chat with the captain and a picture with him.  The characters pass by on the red carpet in the lobby on their way to the theater.  Also some (actor) celebrities join them on the red carpet willing to be photographed, mostly in front of the statue in the lobby.

An adapted version is also performed Hong Kong Disneyland now.
