Juneau, Alaska

Juneau is the capital of the state of Alaska in the narrow piece of land (Alaska Panhandle) between the Canadian province British Columbia and the Pacific Ocean. The city has 30.711 inhabitants (2000) and is named after Joe Juneau, who discovered gold there in 1880. Juneau was selected as capital of Alaska in 1906.

Juneau is the only capital of a US state which is only reachable by boat or plane.  There are no roads from Juneau to the rest of the state or to Canada.

Around Juneau there are different glaciers from which the Mendenhall Glacier and the Lemon Creek Glacier are most known.
