Cannes, France

Cannes is a city in the south of France with 72400 inhabitants (2007). Cannes lies close to Nice on the Côte d’Azur (Mediterranean Sea) in the departement Alpes-Maritimes.

The film festival of Cannes, yearly in May, is an important event for the film industry and took place for the first time in 1946.  In 2007 the 60th anniversary of the event was celebrated.  After the Olympics this is the biggest event in the world.  There also is an annual television festival, broadcasted in the last week of September.  Cannes is the first congress city in France.  In 1922 in Cannes the Conference of Cannes took place.  Every year in March the MIPIM attracts, the largest real estate brokerage in the world, about 25000 professionals. Yearly there are congresses for music, audio equipment and IT technology.  Besides that Cannes is the host for the Cannes Lions International Advertising Festival and the yearly big boat show.  The events take place in the Palais des Festivals et des Congrès at the beginning of the boulevard La Croisette.

All these congresses cause that there are a lot of bars, restaurants and hotels, like the famous and expensive hotels Carlton en Martinez, are present in the neighbourhood.
