Mazatlán is a city in the Mexican state Sinaloa. Mazatlán lies on the coast in the Gulf of California and is one of Mexicos most important ports.  The city has 352,471 inhabitants and is the capital of the municipality Mazatlán.

The name Mazatlán originates from the Nahuatl and means “place of the deer”.  It was the capital of the Mazatecs and was founded in 1820.  In the 19th century the population grew significantly, caused by the silver mining in the neighbourhood.  A lot of immigrants came from Germany.  From 1859 to 1873 Mazatlán was the capital of Sinaloa.
