Tortola is the biggest island of the 4 main islands of the British Virgin Islands. The name probably is an Anglicized version of “TerTholen”, after the Dutch island Tholen, when it still was a WIC colony. It has about 14000 inhabitants.  The island measures 20 by 5 km. On Tortola you can also find the capital Road Town.

On Beef island southeast of Tortola is the airport.  The islands are connected by the Queen Elisabeth II bridge.
